Barbara Zubanovic-Baranowska
The German mezzo-soprano Univ. Prof. Dr. Barbara Zubanovic-Baranowska (stage name: Helena Zubanovich) was born in Poland. She received her musical education at the Music Academy in Katowice and then at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, where she completed her vocal studies with distinction. She completed her training with Ingrid Kremling, Kerstin Mayer, Elio Battaglia, Brigitte Fassbaender, Teresa Zylis-Gara and Eva Blahová.
Since 1st of October 2019, she is Univ. Prof. for singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and has already given several Master Classes. At the Vienna Music Seminar 2021 she will replace Eva Blahová in the International Master Class.
She is a laureate of numerous singing competitions: A. Dvorak (Karlove Vary), Teatro Massimo (Palermo), international operetta competition Robert Stolz (Hamburg) and Mirjam Helin (Helsinki).
She made her opera debut in 1993 at the Silesian Opera Bytom in Poland as Mimi. In 1999 her voice developed into a mezzo-soprano. She celebrated her vocal debut at the Vienna Volksoper as Türkenbab in Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress" and made her debut at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 2013 as Jezybaba in Dvorak's "Rusalka" and became a member of the ensemble in 2015. There she has sung the following roles: Kostelnicka in Janacek's "Jenufa", Frugola in Puccini's "Il Tabarro" and the Mother in Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel".

Of particular note is the participation in the first Chinese Wagner production at the National Center for Art in Beijing in the role of MARY in “Flying Dutchman” directed by Giancarlo del Monaco.
She was also able to establish herself as a concert singer. She performed the Altsolo in the IIIrd symphony of Mahler in Montpellier, the Verdi Requiem in Malmö (Sweden), Posen, Zurich, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Beethoven’s IX. both at the Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg and at the Beethoven Festival in Warsaw.
Helena Zubanovich has opera performances as a dramatic mezzo-soprano at international opera houses: Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro Bellini Catania, Teatro Maestranza Seville, Opéra Nationale Montpellier, Opéra Nationale Normandie Caen, Den Norske Opera Oslo, Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg, Tonhalle Zürich, Nationaltheater Brno, Nationaltheater Prague, Nationaltheater Warsaw, Aalto Theater Essen, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf and Nationaltheater Mannheim.
Her work has brought her together with numerous renowned conductors such as Kiril Petrenko, Simone Young, Tomas Hanus, Marco Armiliato, Pablo Haffter, Asher Fisch, Mirco Letoja, Stefan Anton Rek, Pietro Rizo, Gabrielo Ferro, Alfred Eschwé, Krzysztof Pendercki, Lukasz Borowicz, Antoni Wit, Michael Jurowski and directors such as Denis Krif, Willi Decker and Giancarlo del Monaco.

In 2016 she graduated from the Poznan Conservatory of Music with a PhD in music and voice. As a vocal coach she taught at the music academies of Poznan and Szczecin.
